Lap Band - Approximately 33 Percent of Adults in America are Obese LAP BAND Surgery Can Improve Your Life
In America, one in three of every adult from the age of 20 through 74 is overweight. This means approximately 60 million adult are obese. As obesity is becoming an epidemic and eating is becoming uncontrollable, more and more people are becoming interested in a Lap Band surgery.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, December 08, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Lap Band or the adjustable gastric banding surgery is a minimally-invasive operation used as an alternative medical weight loss intervention in severely obese individuals. Studies show with the FDA approval in 2001; Lap Band surgery to be safest effective procedure for weight loss.

The Lap Band is an adjustable band that is made from silicone and it makes the stomach smaller so that you eat less. It works on the principle of hydraulics. There is an adjustable port which is placed under the skin of the abdominal wall and the doctor can adjust the tightness of the band by adding or reducing fluid from the band. This procedure is only used as a medical weight loss intervention for severely obese people. There are physical requirements that are considered as standard by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to receive the Lap Band surgery. Most insurance companies will pay for part or all of the cost of the procedure if the requirements are met. You will have to be classified as severely obese or morbidly obese and not just obese in order take advantage of the insurance benefits. The cost is anywhere from $15000 to $35000.

The Lap Band surgery is reversible. This means, the stomach is neither cut nor stapled and there is no rerouting of the intestinal tract. Most of the serious complications that occur from gastric bypasses are mainly due to the cutting and rerouting of the intestinal tract which can cause severe infections. With Lap Band surgery, vomiting and nausea are the most common risks and similar to any other surgery, infection and bleeding can occur. There is always a chance that the band can slip and it will need to be placed in its proper spot again.

Lap Band weight loss procedures may present a risk to those who suffer from esophagitis, Crohn's disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. However, don't lose hope. Having one of these conditions does not automatically preclude you from getting the Lap Band. But most of all, one of the reasons that Lap Band surgery is so popular is the fact that it has the potential to be reversed and has fewer complications than other weight loss surgeries.
